Lady Gaga has taken the world by storm in the past year, so wouldn't it make sense for her to be nominated for the Grammy's Best New Artist. Lady Gaga was excluded from the category and some guidelines for the Grammy's have been changed in order for this issue not to be repeated.
She may have been the most popular artist of 2009 but Lady Gaga was ineligible to be nominated for Best New Artist because her single "Just Dance" was nominated for a Grammy in 2008 and previous Grammy nominees can not be nominated for the Best New Artist category.
Neil Portnow, Recording Academy President, says, "There will be some changes so that particular situation won't repeat itself."
Announced today, the change in rules allows past Grammy nominees to be eligible, as long as the artist hasn't released an entire album and doesn't win.
The Academy says, "More and more, the first release of a new artist is as a featured artist on someone else's album or the new artist may release a single long before the release of his/her/their entire first album. By current rules, if the other artist's album or the new artist's single receives a nomination, the new artist may never have the opportunity to compete in the best new artist category. With this change, each artist will have at least one opportunity to enter in this important and highly visible category."
It might be too late for Lady Gaga, but at least this won't happen again.
